Rural traffic lights

Vehicle lights stretch across the scene during a two second long exposure. I set up across the road from this farmstead and the sign. I took a few photographs of the passing traffic. I liked this one as I thought it had beautiful tone and good luck with the interesting light trails. A few more scenes from Shangri-La’s countryside

The countryside surrounding Shangri-La is a rural landscape of small farms, fields and villages divided by densely forested hills, soaring mountains and deeply carved rivers.  When I was in China last month I spent a couple of days driving the narrow roads that connect these places.  These are a selection of these scenes as I experienced them.

Morning in Shangri-La’s countryside

The smoke from early fires, mist from the warming earth and sunlight filtering through the clouds created an interesting atmosphere around this small village in the countryside a few miles north of Shangri-La.  I ended up spending a couple of days in the rural areas outside of the city and enjoyed seeing this side of life and its juxtaposition with the urban pace in the city.

Tsuu T’ina Nation Tour Rodeo Finals

This weekend was the 41st annual Tsuu T’ina Nation’s Rodeo which draws First Nation people born to the saddle from all over North America.  The rodeo is held at the Redwood Meadows Arena which just across Highway 22 from my home.  This is one of my favourite rodeos and it was great to be able to be on the rails for the last day.

It was an afternoon that started with sun which gave way to heavy, heavy rain and ended with high clouds towards the end of the night.  Dynamic photographic opportunities came with the changing weather which was great for me.  Weather doesn’t make too much difference for the people or for the animals – they are all ready to go no matter what is going on above.  I have a stack of photographs to look at, and will share more soon, but wanted to get out this first image of one of the high-flying bull riders from a great afternoon in the Bragg Creek area.

Mist and sunlight on the land

The heavy rain last night created thick mist this morning.  I went out looking to work with the ethereal and had a great time working around a gravel backroad in Bragg Creek and a trail on the edge of Kananaskis.  The weather has been fantastic during the day with storms at night for the past week or so.  I’m happy for this pattern to continue.

Folk Tree for New Year’s Eve

We were invited by Alvise and Paola to enjoy New Year’s Eve at their home on a corner of their Folk Tree Lodge property last night.  Very glad that we took them up on the invitation as we joined a small, wonderful group of people for a delicious potluck dinner, skating on a pond with a bonfire in the middle and a steady stream of good conversations.

Paola and Alvise have a very beautiful property just west of Bragg Creek in Priddis and it looked amazing as I wandered the path between the house and the pond.  I had to take a few photographs away from the evening.

Thank you to our hosts and the other guests for ending last year on a great note.  For those of you who might be looking for a retreat in the Bragg Creek area on the edge of Kananaskis Country in Alberta, Folk Tree is a special place run by a very special family.
