A member of the ground crew at the Calgary International Airport does the critical work of de-icing the airplane during a cold sunrise well below freezing in Alberta, Canada.

Mallard Spray

A female Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) lifts out of the Bow River at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary, Alberta to shake the water off of her wings.

A female Mallard duck stretches out of the water to shake the water off of her wings. My friend Jeff (his photography website) and I were down at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary that is in the middle of Calgary on one side of the Bow River to photograph the birds that overwinter there. There are hundreds of Canada Geese and Mallards on the water at any time. The Sanctuary is a great place to watch their natural behaviour with very few disturbances.

Seascapes with Na Pali’s waves

I love the ocean, I suppose many people do.  I grew up on Kootenay Lake in southeastern British Columbia and there could be rough water but nothing like on the ocean.  Whenever I am on a coast, I enjoy watching the waves.  In December, the waves off of Ke’e Beach at the northern edge of Kaua’i’s Na Pali coast are tall and heavy.  They can be spectacular to watch.

The last day that we went to Ke’e, the waves were not disappointing.

With the sun falling low, a few waves even tried to take a bite.  It was a good day.
