The snow flew many times in December. This was one of the nights where I went out to enjoy one for a little bit. Owing to the falling snow blurring the street lamps were diffused balls of light. The snowflakes also played with the shadows, leaving some sharp while making others soft. This storm felt like there was a good-natured mischief-maker involved.
I wish you and yours a great 2018. I hope the snakes are short and the ladders are long.
I created this image after the fireworks display in my small community (which was great!). The full moon made the whole winter landscape gleam. The lights from the skating rink to the right created interesting shadow layers in a covered trail across the sports field. An abstract start to the new year.
For me, I’m eager for a new year and all of the experiences that will hold. Looking back over 2017, I hope to crisply remember the many wonderful memories from the past year, and let those that were not soften.
When I planned my Easter trip to the Palouse, I knew that I would make a couple of visits to Steptoe Butte. It rises roughly 300 meters above the countryside allowing for an unobstructed view of the entire area. That elevation gain provides a great perspective on the waves of farmland below.
The first morning that I drove up, when the butte came in sight I found it capped by a loose shroud of cloud. After stopping to photograph that I headed up and was soon inside the cloud looking out at the sun rising over the clouds that had stacked up low along the horizon.
When the sunlight gently skipped across the rolling hillsides you could almost watch the color warm. I enjoyed almost an hour of truly amazing light dancing with the shadows it created over the fields. Those fields adding significantly to the views owing to their flowing lines, gentle patterns and earthy tones.
It was so beautiful that I had little hesitation choosing to return the next day. The second visit had a subtly different feel but I enjoyed shooting that morning just as much as the day before.
I was looking through my image library for abstracts that I could use for a print series I’m working on and found the image above. I had photographed a reflection pool from the fourth story of a hotel in Mandalay, Myanmar. Leaning out of the window and using a longer lens, I was first drawn to the koi swimming in the shallow water. However, the trees on edge of the courtyard were casting energetic shadows across the gently rippled surface. I photographed the fish with the shadows for a little while and then dropped the fish altogether. The patterns of the distorted tree shapes in the water mesmerized me. I think of dance in the one above.
