Smoky summer sunsets

The rain the past few days has cleared the air west of Calgary. When the wildfire smoke was heavy before that, the colors from the sunlight filtering through the haze were surprising and very unusual. It made sunset an interesting little photographic adventure.

I thought these images looking at the eastern flank of the Rockies near Bragg Creek from the first day of August were stunning.

Smoky sunset on the prairie

The sun has taken on a strange appearance each of the last few evenings.  The smoke from the wildfires to the west was thick in the foothills west of Calgary last Thursday when I stopped along Highway 8.  The pink globe in the sky drew my attention and, once stopped, I enjoyed watching the small clouds drifting past.  This one looked like a dancing bull, or maybe a bison in full stride, as it charged across the sun.

The forest fires in Washington are terribly frightening and I hope for rain and favourable winds to help the people down there.  Here in the Calgary area, the smoke has carried north which has left the skies hazy for the past week.

In the morning, the sun glows red as it rises out of thickest part of the smoke just above the horizon.

At night, the moon’s color changes, seemingly with her mood, between gold, orange and red.

Evening in the Foothills

The light this evening was lovely and the lines of the hillsides of the Foothills towards Kananaskis Country looked like a water-colour painting.
