A winter night in YYC

Alberta has been thrown into the freezer this week. The temperature, -26ºC/-15ºF and colder, has felt like winter asserting that it is truly here now. It is a shock but I went outside last night while one of the boys had an appointment downtown just to thumb my nose at the chill a little bit. The fingers got cold but I didn’t mind too much. There is something about photographing landscapes when it is really cold that adds to the images – almost a clarity and a stillness – that I really like. These are images of Calgary’s downtown from Discovery Hill as the day slipped away.

Nightscapes of downtown Calgary

A few photographs of downtown Calgary from the north side of the Centre Street Bridge last week during the latest cold snap.

On this last photograph, I entered the frame with the help of a timer in order to provide a contrasting element in the foreground.

Hacienda del Mar in Cabo San Lucas

We are staying at a beautiful resort that is along the shore of the Sea of Cortez about ten kilometres from Cabo San Lucas.  Hacienda del Mar has colonial style architecture painted in vibrant, warm tones.  The villas are surrounded by gardens, pathways and courtyards which attract hummingbirds, sapsuckers and a wide variety of other birds.  This is our second visit here and I took a little time to photograph the grounds on the way to the beach before sunrise the other day.

Hurricane Odile hit the Los Cabos area on September 14, 2014 unleashing 210 km/h winds and 6 hours of torrential rain.  The aftermath saw heavy destruction all along the coast and an unprecedented disruption to Cabo’s primary industry – tourism.  Hacienda del Mar was hit hard but, as seen throughout the area, the people here have done incredible work to get the resort not just back into service but I would say to a better than before state.  It’s a great place with very special people – we are lucky to be able to enjoy time with both.

Calgary’s cityscape at dawn

The sky to the east was beautiful this morning.  I had a chance to photograph from a good elevation which let me see the horizon towards the east and the downtown cityscape in the other direction.  I loved the explosion of color in the clouds preceding the sunrise and those added nice reflections in some of the glass facades of Calgary’s prominent buildings.
