Coyotes living on the prairies

On my frequent drives in search of snowy owls this winter, I often see coyotes. I admire how these creatures thrive during the winter and enjoy being able to watch them hunt mice across the fields. Here are a couple from the past month or so.

And a few more where individuals were going here and there across the prairies.

Have you ever seen coyotes and badgers hunting prairie dogs together? I’m sure it benefits the coyote more than the badger, but it is an interesting bit of symbiotic behavior.

That is something that I have never seen or heard of. It is amazing! I will be studying up on this in the hopes of some understanding should the opportunity to photograph that arise.

I’ve seen it only once, in a meadow on a road to Smith Lake north of Lakeside, Nebraska, in the fantastic Nebraska Sandhills. I’d seen it on National Geographic tv or some such place before that, but it weas much more fun seeing it in real life! As beautiful as your photography is, I truly hope you get a chance some day to capture the Odd Couple on the prey someday! Further, I hope anyone reading this takes a moment to check out your blog. As noted, your wildlife photography is stunningly beautiful!

A nice post with great photos of a beautiful animal. I am going to be in Clagary the weekend of July 8. I want to spend some time in Jasper and Banff doing photography. Any helpful tips for spots to see animals, birds, or nice scenic shots. I have done some research, so don’t spend a lot of time with this request. A few helpful tips from a local might be helpful. Thanks, Christopher, in advance! tc

That last photo is especially appealing. I’ve not yet seen a coyote in my prairie wanderings, but fresh tracks make clear that they’re around. Some may be giving me the eye, just like this one. It’s lovely, the way the color of the fur and the color of the grasses complement one another.
