Winter’s Art: Ice, Water and Snow

An early morning at one of my favourite places in Kananaskis, Elbow Falls. With the stretches of deep cold this winter broken up by the occasional warm chinook arch, the layers of ice along the river and the waterfall that shares its name are really beautiful right now. The color didn’t build in the sky this morning but that allowed me to stay focused on the ice. A very nice morning to spend outside with a camera in hand.

They’re breathtaking. The colors of the ice and the compositions are entrancing. A work of art by nature and the photographer.

Beautiful, and the first photo makes me tingle!

Does the cold affect your camera at all, Chris? My terribly old one baulks at winds and low temps.

Hi Val,
The camera I use now, the Canon 1D Mark III, handles all kinds of weather really well. I’ve used it for long periods outside at -35 C and it has no problems. I used to shoot with a 40D and before that an XT and both of those worked well in the cold but their batteries would drain pretty quickly anywhere below -15 C.
The issues I have with the cold are not with the camera. I have more problems with frozen eyelashes, numb fingers and controlling my breathing so I don’t fog up the viewfinder when I’m photographing.
Cheers,
Chris
