Wild Horses: a foal in Bragg Creek
There is a small herd of wild horses that occasionally spend a couple of days along Highway 22 near Bragg Creek. This past week they stayed in one of the meadows with most of the group fawning over a very young foal. It was great to see them in the field and I was glad they didn’t disappear into the forest when I stopped to watch them.
Wild horses are a contentious issue for some here in Alberta. There are arguments over whether they are actually wild or are feral and what protections should be extended as a result. These horses stay on Tsuu T’ina first nation land and I hope they continue to be safe to roam the territory they have staked out.

Hi, i am from Québec and i am visiting Revelstoke (BC)… and on my way back to Canmore i would like to photographe some wild horse. I have 4 horses at home and it’s my dream to see wild horses. Can you give me somes tips where are they ??
Thanks you!!

Hi Marie-Audrey,
Sundre, Alberta – which is about an hour’s drive north of Calgary and may be a bit out of your way is the best place to look for wild horses. I occasionally see one small herd near Bragg Creek but they follow no schedule at any time of the year so you can’t count on finding them. The Sundre horses can be hard to find but that is your best chance if you can go there. Just so you don’t set expectations so high, I’ve been up to Sundre a number of times, driving the roads outside of the town and I would say I see wild horses maybe 1 out of every 5 trips that I go. However, there are owls, deer and the odd moose up there and it is beautiful open forest and rolling hills so if you go you should have a good time whether you see the horses or not.
Cheers,
Chris

I’ve seen them here for a couple of years now so hopefully that doesn’t change.
