A snowy morning downtown

It was a surprise, to me at least, that a snowstorm blew across Calgary this morning.  I thought that weather wasn’t coming until Friday.  I took a few photographs near City Hall as the snow fell.  It cleared off quickly but provided a wintry reminder that spring has not taken hold quite yet.

  1. There’s so much rich detail in the first photo, such as the texture of the snow-dappled trees, indeed the huge falling snowflakes on the foreground asphalt. You can read the values of the city in this photo: the zebra crossing, the handicap ramp to the left, the trolley tracks. Plus the foggy high rise buildings in the background. Then the contrast, despite all the human accoutrements, there are few people in this lonely, atmospheric photo.

  5. The bits of color in the second and third photos, and the reflectivity in the first, are just delightful. Sometimes, snow can look almost warm: especially when those fat, decorative flakes are falling. But I was curious about Tim, and now I know about Tim Horton’s. I shouldn’t have gone looking. Now, it’s 3:15 a.m., storming like crazy, and I want a doughnut.
