A composition with flowers

A simple composition just to let this beautiful flower shine.   I wanted to position the second flower to provide balance and then chose to use an aperture that would blur everything but the front flower.  I like the abstract repetition and think that the light green highlights in the background provide the visual interest I was trying to capture to allow the image to hold the eye a little longer.

The clouds softened the sunlight so I had great illumination on the greenery in the backyard and on the daisies.  A quiet afternoon with the kids on the deck.

  1. Chris… I just got back from shooting wildflowers in Colorado. Your photo is terrific. Did you use a macro lens? I have been using the Nikon 105mm VR macro…some good shots, some not so good. Nothing that I really feel like publishing yet.

    • Hey Dave,

When you find the ones you’re happy with make sure you send me a link. I’ve never been down to Colorado at this time of the year. I have heard great things.

I used a 300mm F/4 lens. I really like the compression and it close focuses to 4.5′ which covers the frame with a lot of the subject. I have a 100 F/2.8 Macro but I use it sparingly. For flowers and the like I usually use either the 300mm or a wide angle lens. With the wide angle, I like to get as close in to a group of flowers or meadow as I can. Those opportunities to photograph summer flowers are always bits of gold.
