Our Backyard Resident Squirrel
This squirrel has lived in the woodpile beside our garage for more than three years. I used to think that he poached the bird seed for the woodpeckers, chickadees and nuthatches that stay near year round that we put out. Now I just put out extra for this little fellow. This afternoon I was throwing peanuts out on the deck and he showed up right after I whistled to the bluejays to let them know their snack was served. In this photograph the squirrel had carried one of the peanuts up to a low branch while a jay above set some snow loose when it jumped off its perch.
Is it a red squirrel or a grey? Difficult to tell with it’s tail up behind it! Beautiful photo, Chris. Love the ‘bokeh’ in the foreground and surrounding it, too!

Hi Val,
It’s a red squirrel. We have two black squirrels that live nearby but this one chases them away whenever they come into the backyard.
Cheers,
Chris

I love this. There are two squirrels that live in a wood pile in my neighbor’s yard. I watch them just about every day around 2pm. I really don’t think squirrels are appreciated enough.

It’s easy to watch these energetic beasts tear around all day long. I agree they deserve more appreciation.
